Preface
The following pages will provide additional details regarding North Layton Junior High’s plan to implement the Davis School District’s “Big Five” approach to operating while COVID-19 exists in the community. The district’s five aspects are: Hygiene Etiquette, Stay Home When Sick, Cloth Face Mask, Physical Distancing, and Clean & Disinfect.
Please be aware there is no such thing as a “COVID-free zone” in our schools.
The following information provides additional details specific to North Layton Junior High. The school will continue to share information with you through the school’s website under the “Parent and Student” tab. The web page is: https://northlaytonjr.davis.k12.ut.us. The school will also post updates through social media and emails to guardians. Additionally, the school district will continue to share information with you through the district web page: davis.k12.ut.us
Hygiene Etiquette
- Frequent hand washing/sanitizing will be encouraged prior to each class change. Additionally, basic instruction in physical distancing, respiratory etiquette, and proper hand-washing techniques will be provided as part of our Spartan Academy advisory period.
- The school will have free-standing sanitizing stations positioned throughout the school in high traffic areas. Students are asked to sanitize their hands as they enter the building. Our staff will encourage students to sanitize their hands frequently throughout the day.
- Other signage with health recommendations will be posted for bathrooms, drinking fountains, and common spaces.
- Two drinking fountains will be equipped with water bottle refill stations.
Stay Home When Sick
- Students and staff are asked to stay home from school if they have any of the following symptoms: shortness of breath, sore throat, persistent cough, temperature of 100.4 or higher, congestion or runny nose, vomiting or diarrhea, new loss of taste or smell.
- High-risk students (or those with high-risk family members) will be given the option of attending the district’s online school. More information about the online school, Davis Connect, can be found here.
- The school will have a dedicated health room in the main office for symptomatic students. This room will not be used for other purposes. Students exhibiting symptoms after arriving at school will wait in the health room with a facial mask while arrangements are made for them to be picked up by a guardian or emergency contact as soon as possible
Cloth Face Mask
Physical Distancing
- Students will not be assigned lockers (storage space for musical instruments will be available). Students can have a backpack of reasonable size (18 L x 16 W x 6 D) to reduce congestion during passing periods.
- Hallway flow will be designated “stay to the right.”
- Our current bell schedule will allow for three lunches and reduce the number in the cafeteria to 350-370 per lunch instead of 560+.
- Students will be able to eat in the cafeteria, gym hallway, and outside courtyard (weather permitting). Additionally, students will be encouraged to go outside or participate in intramural activities when they finish eating.
Clean & Disinfect
- Electronic devices will be issued to each student for the year. We will have enough devices for each student (please see additional information about computers below).
- The custodial staff have taken great care in deep cleaning the school and will continue to keep common areas clean and sanitized.
- Classrooms will be managed by individual teachers.
- Hand sanitizer will be available in each classroom.
Computers and Digital Learning Tools
- Devices will be issued to each student for the year. We will have enough devices for each student.
- Devices will be issued on the first two days of school. Students should bring their device each day and care for the device throughout the year. Students will be encouraged to place devices in backpacks and “sleeves.”
- The school will have neoprene computer sleeves available to purchase for $5.00. Students are encouraged to bring their own backpacks, earbuds, and water bottles.
- If a student frequently forgets a device, an administrator or counselor will contact and plan with the guardian and student.
- Many departments may have additional “specialty” devices needed for curriculum programs and strategies (iPads, desktops, Microsoft Go).
- If any equipment is shared, the device will be disinfected after each use.
- Teachers will load course materials and activities to Canvas and link any external digital tools. We will prepare and use digital textbooks, resources, activities, and assessments to blend face-to-face instruction with digital tools.
- Issuing devices and utilizing online curriculum will prepare for any remote learning that may occur. Additionally, if students (or the teacher) miss days due to illness, learning can continue.
- There will be a computer insurance available to purchase (if a parent/guardian chooses) for $25. Repairs will then have a $15 copay per incident or a $50 copay if the entire device must be replaced. This insurance will need to be purchased within two weeks being issued the device. Please review the Discretionary Protection Plan and the Device Checkout Agreement. Digitally sign these documents in MyDSD and pay for the protection plan through MyDSD or our main office.
